Timberland senior, Jessica Duncan, received a Superior rating for her on-the-spot editorial cartoon at the JEA/NSPA national high school journalism convention in St. Louis November 13 – 16. Duncan, who serves as the managing editor of Timberland’s school newspaper, The Wolf’s Howl, drew the cartoon after listening to a speech about seat belt safety. There were only four superiors given nationally for this category.
“At first I didn’t think I would get anything. I was shaking when they announced the awards,” Duncan said. “It shows that I can accomplish something where not very many people can succeed. I am very proud of it.”
Almost 5,000 journalism students from all over the nation came to St. Louis for the convention. Eighteen newspaper and yearbook students from Timberland attended. They volunteered for the local convention committee, attended many workshops, competed individually and with their publications and received critiques from award-winning advisers.
“I love going to the national convention because I learned many new things at the seminars that seem crucial to know in the field of journalism. I would recommend going because you walk away with so many new memories and tons of new knowledge,” junior Nikki McGee said.
