THS students awarded at publications event

The Timberland High School newspaper and yearbook staff participated in the Sponsors of School Publications of Greater St. Louis Spring Conference at Webster University on Monday, March 8, 2010.
Students on both staffs brought home a Superior Award for this year’s newspaper (overall category) and an Excellent Award for last year’s yearbook in the overall yearbook category.
THS students also collected 23 individual awards, including senior Nikki McGee who won a “Best of Show” for her November front page design, and only one “Best of Show” is given at the event.
“I am so excited that these kids won this many awards,” said Cathleen McCandless, Timberland’s Newspaper and Yearbook Advisor. “Some of these kids are not athletes and are not scholars, but this is what they do and they do it very well.”
Students also had the opportunity to participate in workshops given by professional journalists and learn about a variety of different journalism topics. Over 650 student journalists from the St. Louis area attended the conference. Additional awards given to Timberland students included:
Superior Award / Newspaper Inside Page Design to Colleen Glaeser for “Going Green: It’s Easier Than You Think”
Excellent Award / Newspaper Feature Writing to Taylor Willer for “A Boy That Leaves You Speechless”
Excellent Award / Newspaper Infographic to Colleen Glaeser for “Big Green Companies”
Excellent Award / Yearbook Photography to Amanda Caracci for “Oh!”
Excellent Award / Yearbook Feature Copy to Ally Grubbs and Angela Bussey for “Growing Gas Prices”
Excellent Award / Wolf Tracks Staff, Yearbook Theme Development for “Oh. Nine”
In addition, 14 Timberland students received Honorable Mention awards for their work.
