Ross Detwiler (#18) and Tim Melville (#9) both made names for themselves pitching in Holt baseball uniforms, and now in their honor, their uniform numbers have been retired. In a special ceremony before Friday’s varsity basketball game, the two Holt alumni were recognized in front of hundreds of fans for their accomplishments on the baseball field.

“They are both quality young men,” said Holt baseball coach Joel Adam, “and they made me a better coach, that’s for sure!”

Detwiler, who graduated in 2004, helped Holt win the District title in his senior season, and played college baseball for Missouri State. He was the sixth pick overall in the first round of the 2007 draft, and has started 19 games for the Washington Nationals over the past two years.

“It was a surprise, but what a great honor,” said the big lefty. “I’ll never forget that moment when we all rushed off the field after beating Troy for the District title!”

Melville helped Holt get to the state championship game in 2007, his junior year. He is a former Gatorade Player of the Year and Rawlings Gold Glove winner who was picked in the fourth round of the 2008 draft, and he is currently pitching in the minors in the Royals organization.

“Something like this doesn’t happen very often,” Melville said. “It’s great that I’ll always be a part of Holt, because I feel like Holt will always be a part of me.”

The two pitchers join former basketball great Tony Wallace as the only players in the history of Holt High School to have their uniform numbers retired.
