Plans are being made for a new three-mile segment of the Dardenne Greenway at Rabbit Run Park in St. Peters. The project, which is scheduled to be completed by spring of 2009, was kicked off with a groundbreaking on Friday morning at Woodlands Park.

The new trail will run from Woodlands Park to Mexico Road and will include a 180-foot pedestrian and bicycle bridge spanning Dardenne Creek as well as a nature observation overlook and native wildflower restoration areas.

Including connections to the subdivisions of Ohmes Farms and Lakes of Devondale, the trail will also connect to an existing one-half mile trail which runs from Mexico Road to Dardenne Park.

St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano stated that the trail will be a great asset to the community, making it convenient for people to walk, jog and bicycle.

According to David Fisher, Executive Director of the Great Rivers Greenway District, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy Dardenne Creek’s natural beauty and scenic areas.

The planned trail will be a segment of the Dardenne Greenway, a 36-mile greenway paralleling Dardenne Creek. It will eventually connect to the Katy Trail and Busch Conservation Area.

Once completed, the Dardenne Greenway will pass through St. Peters, O’Fallon, Cottleville, Dardenne Prairie and St. Charles including some areas of unincorporated St. Charles County.

Other projects include a one-mile trail in Cottleville and a one-mile trail in Dardenne Prairie.

Established in 2000, The Great Rivers Greenway District will provide a region-wide system of interconnected greenways, parks and trails called the River Ring.
