Overnight thunderstorms hit St. Charles County

Residents took notice as last night’s thunderstorms blew through the area. Winds in excess of 50 mph, thunder and lightning rocked St. Charles County.

While the National Weather Service reports observed precipitation in some areas of the county at 2.5 inches, some creeks are brimming. St. Charles County absorbed a torrent of rain last night and the effects linger today.

Water flooded the ball diamonds at the park on Brown Road in St. Peters, MO. Nearby, Dardenne Creek was still flowing briskly Tuesday afternoon under the pedestrian bridge, and a park bench was nearly under water.

At about 8:30 p.m. last night, there were reports of a tractor-trailer overturning near Foristell. The truck was heading east on Interstate 70, and its driver was trapped for about 30 minutes. The highway was shut down briefly.

Compared to nearby areas, St. Charles County seemed to escape the wrath of last night’s storm. Reportedly, during last night’s tornadoes, one woman was killed in Greene County and another woman was killed in Marshfield, MO, the county seat to Webster County. Marshfield is no stranger to the devastation that tornadoes bring. In 1880, a tornado categorized as F4 hit the city, killing about 100 residents.

Phelps County also bore some of the brunt of tornadoes last night, resulting in much building damage. The same storm system affected areas in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Showers and temperatures plummeting into the 30’s are the forecast for tonight.
