The St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department’s crime lab has been awarded accreditation, making it the only sheriff’s department in Missouri having an accredited crime lab.

The accreditation, which lasts five years, was given under the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board Legacy Program.

The program is voluntary and participating laboratories must meet established standards in management, operations, personnel, procedures, equipment, physical plant, security and safety.

All disciplines of the laboratory, including Forensic Biology/DNA, firearm functionality, serial number restoration, controlled substances, blood alcohol, fire debris and explosives, were inspected last February.

This national review board has accredited only 341 international, federal, state, local and private laboratories.
