Celebrate Missouri’s heritage of beer, wine and mead* production at the Missouri Day Celebration to be held on Wednesday, October 15, at First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site in St. Charles.

Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the event is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the historic site. It is free and open to the public.

“Missouri’s Liquid Assets: Brewing, Steeping and Stomping” is the theme of this event, which is designed to introduce adults to Missouri’s rich cultural heritage.

Beer, wine and mead production was not only a staple in early 19th century life but eventually became a multi-million dollar industry in Missouri.

Demonstrations will include brewing, hops growing, grape stomping and honeybee farming. Non-alcoholic period refreshments will be available.

In 1915, the 48th General Assembly set aside the third Wednesday in October each year as “Missouri Day.” It is a time for schools to honor the state and for the people of the state to celebrate the achievements of all Missourians.

First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site served as the meeting place for the state’s first legislators from 1821 through 1826. Today, the governmental chambers and dry goods store have been restored to their original appearance.

The historic site is located at 200-216 South Main in St. Charles.

For more information on the event, call the site at 636-940-3322 or the Department of Natural Resources directly at 800-334-6946 (voice) or 800-379-2419 (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf).
