Heritage Primary second graders Ahmad Thirdkill and Adrian Gines were recognized at the Wentzville School District Board of Education meeting on May 20, 2010 for “exhibiting bravery and determination in a life saving effort.”
The boys were honored for their actions on April 23, 2010 when Adrian and his 9-year-old brother Caleb were playing down by a cove of Lake Saint Louis, and Caleb slipped and fell into the water.
Ahmed Thirdkill was playing in a field nearby and heard the cries for help. Ahmad, who cannot swim, jumped into the water and managed to hold Caleb’s head above the water while Adrian ran home for help. When Caleb and Adrian’s father, Adrian Gines, Sr. arrived at the scene, he noted that Ahmad (who is smaller than Caleb) was helping him to stay afloat. Adrian Sr. safely pulled both boys from the water.
“We had a long talk about staying away from the water after that, Adrian Sr. said. “We are so grateful to both boys for what they did.”
Gines added that it all came together that day exactly as it need to in order for it to be a good outcome. “We know how differently this could have turned out and we are very proud of both Adrian and Ahmad.”
The boys have also been recognized at school and by the Wentzville Police Department for the bravery they exhibited that day.
