The grand opening of the Meadows at Lake Saint Louis occurred Sat. morning with much fanfare.

Wentzville Holt High School’s band performed, a color guard presented arms and Marty Linson’s sculpture was unveiled.

Mayor Potter said a few words. Representatives of Davis Street Land Company, the project’s development company, also spoke. Dignitaries performed the ribbon cutting, kicking-off festivities for the day.

Flush twice

During his speech, Robert Perlmutter of Davis Street addressed sewer issues of the Meadows project stating that the restrooms were beautiful and “everybody should try them out.”

“We can even thank some of the neighboring cities on our way out,” said Perlmutter after he encouraged restroom patrons to “flush twice.”

O’Fallon’s Mayor, Donna Morrow, has not yet returned our call for a comment regarding Perlmutter’s statement.

Sewer hookups: a sore subject

Davis Street had sued the City of O’Fallon and Public Water Supply District No. 2. O’Fallon issued a freeze preventing new homes and businesses from being connected to the system. Public Water Supply District No. 2 also sued the City of O’Fallon.

The freeze put a hold on projects such as the Meadows. Davis Street cited an agreement that O’Fallon made in 2004 between O’Fallon and the water district which states that the water district has control regarding new users.

In a January ruling, Circuit Judge Nancy Schneider declared that O’Fallon should honor that 2004 agreement. In addition, in June of this year, the state gave the go-ahead for O’Fallon’s treatment plant to handle 1.25 million gallons more of wastewater per day. The freeze was lifted.

O’Fallon residents are now being asked to handle sewer rate increases to pay for the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant. The proposed rate increase would double the fee by 2013.

A public hearing on sewer rate increases will occur at the next O’Fallon City Council meeting on Aug. 28 (public hearing was continued from the Aug. 14 meeting).
