On October 5th, 2011, the Hope High School Leadership Class held their Alumni Kickball Tournament in O’Fallon’s Civic Park. The purpose of the tournament was to raise money to place a bench and tree in Civic Park.  The students exceeded their fundraising goal and were able to purchase the bench and two trees.

The tournament was special to Hope High because every spring and fall the students play kickball at Civic Park. They determined that this tournament would be a great way to include the alumni in giving back to the community park system.  Students wrote letters to local businesses asking for donations for the event.  The community responded and donations were received by Stephanina’s Restaurant, A Better Pizza, Olive Garden, WingStop, Mr. Goodcents, Penn Station, Bonzai -  The Sushi Place, and Fazoli’s.

The Hope High Leadership Class is a course at the school that teaches students the qualities of a leader and the importance of service learning. Each year, the class researches, plans, and implements a service learning project.  This year they were hoping to beautify their local park and when they found out about the Memorial Bench & Tree Program, they decided it would be a great way to accomplish that goal. They also decided to commemorate the bench & tree in the memory of Austin Dawid, a Hope High alumni.

Hope High School is the Fort Zumwalt alternative school located on 307 West Pitman Street in O’Fallon. All of the students that attend Hope High are from other Fort Zumwalt high schools.
